“Off the Wall” Create your creativity….!

Here’s some information about a new course I’m giving called, “Off the Wall” (and there are some workshops below as well). Or should I say, old new course? In that it’s back by popular demand. Silvermine cleaned up my description posted here, which was a bit zany in tone. I think I said “no fireworks,” re supplies, at least literally. Because strangely bright and explosive art does figuratively  occur!

Anyone at any level can participate since the art media involved can be as basic as cutting and pasteing, or as traditional a hand craft as sewing. You’ll find you can make art out of many things you’ve set your hand to- as in, remember those potholder sets?  That’s part of the discovery in this class.

I give the class projects. We had a project around “secrets” which needed to either be revealed, or be concealed in your work. It could be a profound secret or a simple one like “I ate my daughter’s chocolate Easter bunny” (if my husband were in the class, this might come up…). The secret didn’t have to be exposed; hiding it away could be part of the scheme.

One student brought in an altered doll house on a lazy susan. One side the good girl’s house, the other side the messy, funky girl’s . But, that wasn’t the secret! I was told to flip a switch on the dollhouse, which then became illuminated. My student’s secret was…she knew how to install electricity!

We send mail art. This is wide open. You can send almost anything other than a small child. (I beleive this was the piquant wording  of a post office official when someone sent Mike Tyson a dried pig ear  through the mail after his famous biting incident of, was the bittee… Xander Hollyfill? I am not looking up the spelling of his name right now… ) No dangerous stuff also. Sandals, glasses, a whoopee cushion, all made it through the post office to our class at Silvermine.

This is a bit like deriving art from leftovers. What do you have in your skill set, your imagination, that can be looked at , cooked up differently, in order to create art? Not gorgeously perhaps. But with fun, and…creativity, and imagination?

This class is for students who want to develop a more imaginative approach to their artwork. We will learn how to develop unique visual ideas and strengthen individual creativity. “Off the Wall” exercises; games and homework assignments are designed to stimulate students to create new, engaging approaches to making their art. New ideas will be more important than perfect execution, though constructive critique and technical assistance will be provided. Open to all levels of artistic experience. Students are welcome to use any media or craft skill they have experience with- for example: sewing, carpentry, knitting as well as traditional art media like painting and drawing. Students bring their own materials. Consultation with the instructor prior to the beginning of the class is a good idea.
